Student-Generated Scientific Inquiry

A very interesting approach.

The goal of Student-Generated Scientific Inquiry is to develop a capstone course for preserve elementary education teachers that engages students in crafting and investigating their own scientific questions in topics that span the scientific disciplines.  The coursework will scaffold students’ inquiry activities to move beyond simple “science fair” projects that seek to find correlations, toward a deeper understanding of investigation and experimentation as a methodology for evaluating scientific models and mechanistic explanations.  Evaluations and research will investigate students’ understandings of the nature of science, of scientific inquiry, and methodologies, assessing the degree to which the inquiry supports students in developing sophisticated understandings of the nature of science, improves their confidence in teaching scientific ideas and inquiry, and assess their abilities to plan and evaluate scientific investigations.
